FeelNYC’s review of the fabulous Museum Mile Festival 2012 in New York is a solid thumbs up! The Museum Mile, in New York’s Upper East Side, comprises a stretch along famous 5th Avenue in New York lined with museums and cultural institutions, a paradise for authentic culture vultures. And with the Museum Mile Festival 2012, New York has gone one better as on Tuesday the 12th of June, from 6 to 10pm, 10 museums along this marvelous mile will be open free for the public to enjoy!

This annual event was initially started in 1979 to promote the arts in New York and make it more accessible to the public. Since then, more than 1 million people have carried out this famous walk from 82nd street to 104th street.

In addition, 5th Avenue is completely closed off to traffic, thus Museum Mile festival-goers can enjoy a pleasant stroll, visit the 10 participating museums, and take part in all the special exhibitions and events on offer.

Featuring this 2012 are the following ten museums and cultural institutions situated along the New York Museum Mile; the Museum for African Art, the Museo del Barrio, Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum, and the Cooper-Hewit, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, as well as the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts, the world-famous Guggenheim Museum, the Neue Galerie New York, the Goethe-Institut New York, and last but not least, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  In addition, fortunate visitors to the festival can take advantage of the outdoor activities for children, as well as live music ranging from jazz and show tunes to string quartets, and the various street performances. The Museum Mile Festival this year will be kicking off at the National Academy Museum on 1083, 5th Avenue at 5.45pm so you’ve no excuse!
