Empìre State Building

The Empire State comprises the tallest building in New York City, the 3rd in the United States, and for 40 years following its construction, was the tallest in the world. It stands a total of 1,454 feet high and features 102 floors with an observation deck on the 102nd floor and another on the 86th containing an indoor viewing gallery for chillier days. As many as 110 million people have made their way to the top of the Empire State Building and enjoyed the spectacular 360º views of New York City on offer. Furthermore, the Empire State Building Observation Deck has featured in various famous films such as “Sleepless in Seattle” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, and “Love Affair” with Katharine Hepburn and Pierce Brosnan, amongst many others.

It comprises a simulated aerial tour over the city and probably a better option for those of you who have a slight fear of heights. Where:  350, 5th Avenue, New York. Between 33rd and 34th Street with entrance on 5th Avenue. When: Open 365 days a year from 8am to 2am. Directions: The closest subway station is Penn Station on the 1, 2 or 3 lines.  Price: 23 dollars for the Main Observation Deck with concessions, and discounts available with the New York City Pass. Tickets can be purchased in advance.

Top of the Rock Observation Deck

The Top of the Rock Observation Deck, situated in the GE building at the famous Rockefeller Centre in New York, arguably offers the best views of the city from the top.

Top_of_the_Rock_Observation_Deck1It comprises the 10th tallest building in New York City, and 33rd in the United States.  This famous observation deck, consisting of three floors of indoor and outdoor decks, was built to resemble that of an ocean liner and offers some magnificent, unobstructed 360º views of New York that you will never forget.  Furthermore, there are some coin-operated binoculars available at the top and an audio tour of your visit with the official Top of the Rock podcast to accompany you.  Finally, the Rockefeller Centre also houses the NBC studios, and offers some great shopping and dining opportunities so you can really make a full day of it! Where:  30, Rockefeller Plaza, Manhattan, New York. When: Open from 8am to midnight, 7 days a week. Directions:  47-50 Streets, Rockefeller Centre MTA subway station located on concourse level of the Rockefeller Centre. The B,D,F and M trains can also be accessed from there. Price:  25 dollars with concessions. Tickets can be purchased in advance.
